The AWIL Screen Acting department is unique in Botswana in that it prepares actors primarily for motion picture entertainment content. Actors are given the opportunity to learn and under- stand all aspects of filmmaking and are encouraged to participate in the origination and development of screen plays and characters, as well as understanding and expressing human emotion, psychology and behaviour for their intended audiences.

Production Design is one of the most conceptually challenging film-making disciplines. Production designers require an ever-developing knowledge of architecture, fashion, industrial and graphic design. At AWIL, students are trained to use this knowledge to create visual worlds that represent a realistic illusion in which the action unfolds, and to create an overall aesthetic style that foregrounds the characters and the narrative concept.

Although a relatively new department, Costume, Make-up and Styling (or CMS) has made a notice- able impact on the production values of AWIL films and television shows. CMS students learn to analyse the narrative in order to define the visual form of the scriptʼs characters, as well as learn the technical aspects of costume design, pattern-making, costume manufacture, hairstyling, make-up, special effects make-up and overall styling.

The AWIL Editing department trains young filmmakers to ensure visual continuity, both on set and in post, and to select images to create the stories of many film productions emerging from AWIL. The AWIL Editing department cuts primarily on Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier Pro and has produced some of the top editors in Botswana today.

The AWIL Sound Design department is responsible for conceptualizing, originating, recording, editing and mixing the sound tracks of the many films that are produced by AWIL film students.

The AWIL Media Music Production department grew out of a demand to develop composers, performances and voice artists who could Conceptualize and produce a wide range of media music products for TV programmes and commercials, radio shows, feature films, gaming, internet and cellphone content. No formal music training is required but an innate passion for music is essential. Students have the opportunity to produce and cut their own CDs and perform in their own music videos.

The AWIL Animation Directing department focuses primarily on 3D animation where young directors are responsible for developing the screenplay, directing, lighting and creating the visual world of the characters.

Directing is one of the most misunderstood discipline in the film-making process. Yes, the director should have a thorough knowledge of the motion picture medium, understand the role of all the disciplines that make up the production team, and have the ability to communicate his vision of the production to the crew and cast. However, his primary function is to entertain the audience by structuring compelling narrative material. At AWIL, students are thoroughly trained in all aspects of this vital craft.

The AWIL Cinematography department trains young filmmakers in both digital and traditional film emulsion cinematography. AWIL learners are taught to Conceptualize the lighting, colour, framing, continuity and camera movements to capture the images which tell the story. Cinematography requires learners to use their artistic expression by meeting the technical challenges and opportunities presented by camera capacity, lensing, film stock and the use of resources.

The discipline of visual effects involves using various techniques of perfect the visual modality of the motion picture medium. The AWIL Visual Effects department trains students in camera and on set for the following components: 2D animation, title and credit design, motion graphics, blue-screen- keying, motion trading, roto-scoping, grading and colour timing, stop motion, 3D modelling and miniature building.

From the initial concept through to acquiring the rights, selecting and appointing key crew and cast, the producer is responsible for delivering the product to the audience or client as promised. Students will learn to master the producerʼs three main areas of accountability: to identify and acquire valuable entertainment assets; to raise the finance required to complete the project on schedule and within budget; to market and distribute the product to generate a profitable return on investment. Without a production department, no production can ever get off the ground.
